Assisi, Italy

The town of Assisi, nestled among the hills of Umbria, became famous thanks to the birth of St. therein. Francis, the patron saint of Italy. Pilgrims have come here for centuries to visit the church of San Francesco (St. buried here. Francis) and the church of Santa Chiara (it houses the tomb of St. Clare). Visit desert Carceri, where you will be able to see caves in which to retire medieval hermit. (The local peace of mind may seem very attractive, especially if you come on a day trip from Rome!)
