Aurangabad, India


City in Maharashtra state, on the Kaum River, 190 mi ENE of Mumbai. Founded by Malik Ambar of Ahmadnagar in 1610, it became the capital of the Mogul Empire under Aurangzeb in the late 17th century. It is famous for the mausoleum of Aurangzeb's wife and for the nearby Buddhist rock temples that date from the sixth century a.d.
