The former capital of Vijayanagara Empire Hampi remains an important religious center with the temples of Virupaksha, Lakshmi Narasimha, Hemakuta Hill, Big Shivling and Vithala. Architectural ruins of Hampi are listed UNESCO World Heritage Site.
