Torres Vedras, Portugal


Town in Lisboa district, 26 mi N of Lisbon, in Estremadura, W central Portugal. Captured by Alfonso I from the Moors in 1147, it was an important fortress and royal residence in the Middle Ages.During the Peninsular campaign of the Napoleonic Wars it was the site of the famous lines built by the duke of Wellington to defend Lisbon against the French.
